About this specimen
A poodle lies stretched out, chin lifted and cheeks cut into a soft grin, and the carver has done something clever with the raw material: the domed pom of hair on the head and the coat across the shoulders and hips are left in the stone’s natural sugary, honey-brown state, while muzzle, chest and paws are worked down to a smooth creamy white. A polished black onyx bead sits in place of the eye, glossy against all that matte texture.
The colour split is not paint but the stone itself — an iron-stained outer zone running tan to rust over a pale, crystalline interior. Carving to that boundary is the whole trick here: cut too deep and the coat vanishes, stop too soon and the face stays muddy. The finished surfaces are left unpolished, keeping a faintly granular texture that reads convincingly as fur.
It measures 11.4 × 4.6 × 10.2 cm and weighs 580 g, heavy enough to sit firmly on a shelf without any mount. The animal you see here is the animal that will be boxed for dispatch.
