About this specimen
Brazil ludlamite at 4.9 cm; a miniature plate. Wedge-shaped crystals in a clear apple green lie across a speckled grey matrix, each plate glassy along its edges and set at a different angle to its neighbours.
Ludlamite is a hydrated iron phosphate that forms tabular, apple- to olive-green crystals with a glassy lustre, usually in the phosphate pockets of granite pegmatites and tin veins.
Brazil's Minas Gerais pegmatites are the world's leading source of quartz, tourmaline and beryl crystals.
By size it is miniature, 4.9 × 4.7 × 1.7 cm (1.93 × 1.85 × 0.67 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
