About this specimen
Seafoam green, and matte rather than glassy: the fluorite in this small cluster wears a frosted skin that scatters light across the faces instead of reflecting it, so the colour seems to glow from inside the whole group. The cube corners have been cut back to broad bevels, and a ruffled white calcite rosette sits at the centre like a flower pressed into the surface.
That frosting is not damage but the record of a late chemical episode: mildly aggressive fluids etched the crystal surfaces after growth ended, rounding the edges and leaving the satin texture collectors of etched fluorite look for. Underneath it the mineral is still CaF2 at Mohs 4 — softer than a steel blade, and parting cleanly on octahedral planes if it is dropped.
It measures 4.1 × 3.3 × 2.5 cm and weighs 60 g, a small miniature that settles into the hollow of the palm, shown here without a stand. Photographed from the specimen itself, not a stock image.
