About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with cassiterite and mica at 10.5 cm and over 500 g per the supplier; a cabinet piece. A block of tan mica books with a pale, glassy aquamarine prism set into its face and black cassiterite at the right.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water. Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

The piece is cabinet in size, 10.5 × 7.8 × 6.8 cm (4.13 × 3.07 × 2.68 in) and 500 g (17.6 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
