About this specimen
Romania, rhodochrosite with quartz at 3.1 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Rhodochrosite in a soft powder pink spreads as a crust of small crystals over a pale quartz base, the pink strongest across the top surface and fading where the crust thins.
The pink in rhodochrosite comes from manganese; crystals like these are far rarer than the banded stalactitic material used in jewellery.
Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities.
Romania's Baia Mare and Cavnic mining districts in the Carpathians are historic European sources of quartz, calcite, stibnite and sulfosalt minerals.
