About this specimen
Olive and moss tones compete for the surface of this small prehnite ball, the darker green interrupted by pale cream veins that loop and hook their way around it. The finish is matte and finely granular rather than glassy, and one shoulder carries a pocket of darker yellow-green crystal sunk just below the surrounding skin.
Prehnite is a calcium aluminium silicate that almost never grows as free-standing single crystals. It builds instead in botryoidal crusts and tight radiating aggregates, which is why so much of it arrives as rounded, hand-filling shapes like this one. At Mohs 6 to 6.5 it is tough enough to handle freely, and its slightly waxy lustre takes light softly instead of throwing it back.
The ball measures 3.3 cm across and weighs 50 g. It is propped on white putty over a clear acrylic block for the camera, and the frames above show this exact ball.
