About this specimen

Inner Mongolia phantom purple fluorite with calcite and pyrite at 210 g; a small cabinet piece that needs a lamp behind it.

Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and is prized for its saturated colour, glassy lustre and the way zoned phantoms appear when the crystals are back-lit.

Collectors chase calcite for form rather than colour: crisp crystal edges and a habit you can identify from across the room. Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.

The Huanggangliang skarn district of Inner Mongolia is one of the great mineral finds of the 21st century, known for fluorite, calcite, garnet and rare species.

The piece is small cabinet in size, 7.7 × 5.1 × 5.1 cm (3.03 × 2.01 × 2.01 in) and 210 g (7.4 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
