About this specimen

Peru, pyrite with galena at 3.3 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Pyrite crystals carrying a gold-and-green iridescent film are grouped against steel-grey galena, the two metals catching the light in quite different ways across the piece.

Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.

Galena is lead sulfide, forming heavy, mirror-bright cubes and octahedra; it is the classic companion of sphalerite and quartz in lead-zinc deposits.

Peru's Huancavelica and Pasco mines are famous for pyrite, quartz, fluorite and sulfide specimens.

The piece is miniature in size, 3.3 × 2.7 × 1.7 cm (1.30 × 1.06 × 0.67 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Contains lead-bearing minerals: wash hands after handling and keep away from children and pets.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
