About this specimen
A broad, blade-like crystal stands upright at the centre of this Inner Mongolia specimen, milky and faintly green where light passes through it, and from its lower half a spray of slender white prisms fans outward like a dropped handful of needles. Tiny black grains are scattered over nearly every face, dozens of them, and the base darkens into a rough matrix stained rust-orange.
Quartz and calcite together are the signature of the region’s carbonate-hosted pockets, and the pairing is a useful one to own: side by side in a single hand specimen you can compare a mineral of Mohs 7 with one of Mohs 3. Treat the softer partner as the limit — a soft brush, never acid, never an ultrasonic tank — and support the piece from underneath when moving it, since slender prisms snap easily.
