About this specimen

A single mahogany-red crystal lies across this Daye plate like a hull run aground — faces matte with iron oxide, edges drawn razor-straight, and one long keel ridge picking up a thin line of gold wherever the light rides along it. Beneath and around it a bed of pale amber calcite, peach at the tips and near-colourless in the throats, carries the weight.

Daye is iron and copper country, and that is where the colour comes from: fine iron oxide taken up during growth stains the large crystal to oxblood while the later, cleaner generation below stayed honey-pale. One big matte crystal on a bright druse is a composition that reads from across a room. Calcite (CaCO3) is only Mohs 3, cleaves perfectly in three directions, and etches on contact with anything acidic — including fingertips left on it too long.

At 12.7 × 12.4 × 5.6 cm and 525 g this is a true cabinet piece, not a thumbnail. It travels unmounted, and these pictures were taken of this plate alone.
