About this specimen
Stacked like poker chips caught mid-shuffle, tan and honey-coloured calcite discs pile into a small upright tower, each stack tilted at its own angle so the whole group turns as your eye climbs it. Rosettes of the same platy crystals bud from the flanks. The surfaces are silky rather than glassy, and the thinnest plate edges glow warm when the light comes from behind them.
Collectors call this the paddle or poker-chip habit: calcite spread flat, plate upon plate, a shape driven by the chemistry of the fluid rather than by the symmetry of the mineral itself. Yaogangxian carbonates take the form fairly often, and the tan cast usually signals a little iron in the system. With Mohs 3 and rhombohedral cleavage, the plate edges are the vulnerable part — lift the piece by its base, never by a projecting fan.
At 5.1 × 3.8 × 3.6 cm and 55 g it displays upright on the clear acrylic block supplied with it, held by removable putty. The images here record this individual cluster, base and all.
