About this specimen

Stacked calcite plates step up a cone from a broad base to one sharp apex, the whole tower washed a soft salmon-orange. Each tier overhangs the one beneath it, and between the tiers the dark grey host rock shows through wherever the calcite thins to translucency. The topmost crystal stands proud and fully terminated, finishing the stack like a finial.

The colour is carried inside the crystal rather than painted on its surface: look into the thinner plates and the orange tint runs right through them. Daye, in Hubei, is skarn country, and calcite arrives late in that sequence, filling open space after the ore minerals have finished growing. Mohs 3 with three cleavage directions means one rule — carry the tower by its base, never by its point.

6.6 × 5.6 × 5.1 cm and 165 g, broad-footed enough to stand unaided. These images were made from this individual piece; the tiering and the grey inclusions belong to it alone.
