About this specimen

A dense pelt of bladed crystals covers the entire show face of this plate: straw-yellow with an olive cast, translucent, each blade a flattened wedge only a few millimetres long, packed shoulder to shoulder until the surface bristles under a lamp. Along the bottom edge the crust breaks to a thin white seam and then to charcoal-dark host rock, a tonal cut that frames the yellow sharply.

Vanadinite, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, is best known in fire-engine red, but the species also grows in pale straw and olive tones and this plate sits entirely at the light end of that range. It is a lead vanadate of the oxidised zone, Mohs 2.5–3 — soft enough for a fingernail to mark, which means no cloth should ever be dragged across those blade tips.

Generous in the hand at 11.4 × 3.8 × 10.2 cm and 615 g, it is shown held without a base. The frames on this listing belong to this plate only.
