About this specimen

One crystal, not a cluster: a single broad cube, near-colourless with the faintest sea-green breath deep inside it, its faces built in fine parallel terraces that catch light like brushed glass. A white druse of small quartz crystals has crept up the edges and across the lower faces, and a line of brassy metallic specks marks the contact where the crystal once sat on its matrix.

Yaogangxian in Hunan is known for saturated purples and greens, which makes a pale crystal like this one the quieter choice — and often the more transparent, since the lattice defects and trace elements that give fluorite its colour also cloud it. Fluorescence in the species is unpredictable: some Yaogangxian material answers ultraviolet light and some ignores it, so treat any glow as a bonus rather than a promise. Mohs 4 and perfectly cleavable, it wants a shelf of its own.

4.8 × 4.6 × 4.3 cm and 90 g, supplied loose, with a hand in the frame to give the scale. The crystal in these pictures is the crystal you will get.
