About this specimen
Shanxi, red hematoid quartz with specular hematite at 2.2 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. A quartz point in dusty pink-red with a darker granular crust of hematite spread over its shoulders, small black specular hematite flecks catching the light among it.
Hematoid quartz is coloured by hematite inclusions, giving it a warm red-to-orange body colour that intensifies in strong light.
Specularite forms glittering steel-grey plates, the iron oxide that makes so much Guangdong quartz sparkle.
Shanxi produces calcite, fluorite and quartz from its lead-zinc and fluorite districts.
The piece is thumbnail in size, 2.2 × 2 × 1.5 cm (0.87 × 0.79 × 0.59 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
