About this specimen

Inner Mongolia skeletal quartz with red-fluorescing calcite at 100 g; a small cabinet piece with an unusual quartz form.

Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.

Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.

Inner Mongolia's Huanggang and Chifeng districts produce fluorite, calcite, garnet and rhodochrosite in a lustre and clarity that set the modern standard for Chinese carbonates.

By size it is small cabinet, 7.6 × 5.2 × 3.4 cm (2.99 × 2.05 × 1.34 in) and 100 g (3.5 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
