About this specimen

A crown of steel-bright blades tops this Hunan piece. Stibnite crystals, some knife-straight and some gently bent, radiate in overlapping sheaves from a tan matrix dusted with small quartz crystals, their deeply striated faces throwing hard silver highlights against the darker, duller bundles behind them.

Stibnite is antimony sulphide, Sb2S3, and Hunan is the classic source for well-formed crystals of it. It is also among the softest things anyone puts on a shelf: Mohs 2, soft enough for a fingernail to mark, and easily bent out of true by pressure alone. Never wipe the blades and never let another specimen rest against them — a soft dry brush is the only tool that should ever touch this one.

The piece runs 7.6 × 4.3 × 5.1 cm and weighs 150 g, with the matrix flat enough underneath to let it sit upright without support. What the camera recorded is exactly what leaves us: this specimen, these blades.
