About this specimen
Half a dozen frosted octahedra, each a sharp triangular pyramid of icy-white fluorite, rise from a khaki-and-cream crust on this Daye specimen. They are translucent rather than transparent, so light entering a face diffuses inside and the crystals glow softly instead of sparkling; a few carry small olive-coloured flecks caught on their faces, and a dark core of rock shows at the base.
Octahedra are the less usual habit for fluorite, most of which grows as cubes — and they are also the shape fluorite comes apart into, since perfect cleavage in four directions means a struck cube parts along octahedral planes into exactly this geometry. The same structural preference is what makes natural octahedral faces this flat. Daye, in Hubei, is a long-worked mining district and a classic Chinese label.
Small and shelf-friendly at 5.6 × 2.8 × 5.1 cm and 70 g, with no stand included. Shown in hand for scale, and the octahedra in that hand are the ones that will be wrapped.
