이 내몽골 표본의 정육면체는 벨벳을 한참 넘어설 만큼 짙게 눌러 담은 보라색이라 빛이 뒤에서 비쳐 들기 전까지는 검게 보입니다. 빛이 통하는 순간 가장자리가 제비꽃빛으로 빛나고, 내부에서는 각진 팬텀 성장이 한 단계씩 차례로 모습을 드러냅니다. 그 주위와 아래에는 무광의 포도상 구체가 이룬 옅은 올리브 노란색 껍질이 쌓여 어두운 형석을 앞으로 밀어냅니다.
팬텀은 성장이 잠시 멈춘 사이 다른 광물의 얇은 막이, 혹은 단순히 용액의 변화가 결정면에 내려앉은 뒤 다시 성장이 이어질 때 만들어집니다. 더 작고 이른 시기의 정육면체 윤곽이 더 큰 결정 안에 봉인된 채 남습니다. 검정에 가까운 짙은 색은 CaF2 격자의 색중심에서 비롯됩니다. 형석은 모스 경도 4에 완전한 팔면체 벽개를 지니므로 모서리가 아니라 모암을 잡고 다루어 주십시오.
크기 6.1 × 5.0 × 4.4 cm, 무게 135 g입니다. 함께 제공되는 투명 아크릴 블록에 올린 상태로 촬영했으며, 사진 속 표본이 그대로 배송됩니다.
