이 표본에 대하여
이 인도산 표본의 바닥은 놋쇠빛 황철석 껍질로, 그 표면은 기름막 같은 산화 변색을 띠어 손에 쥔 각도에 따라 금색에서 초록과 청동빛으로 옮겨 갑니다. 그 바닥에서 무색 석영 결정이 자라 나옵니다. 길고 잘 발달한 결정 끝 두 개가 위로 또 뒤로 뻗고, 그 사이에는 낮은 유리질 돔이 있으며, 옆면에서는 더 가느다란 침상 결정 무리가 부챗살처럼 퍼집니다.
황철석(FeS2) 위의 무지갯빛은 누가 입힌 것이 아닙니다. 결정면에 생긴 극히 얇은 산화 피막이 비눗방울과 거의 같은 방식으로 백색광을 갈라 놓은 것입니다. 이 피막이야말로 표본에서 가장 연약한 부분입니다. 문지르거나 광을 내거나 물로 닦으면 그대로 벗겨집니다. 표본은 마른 상태로 보관하시고 부드러운 붓만 사용하십시오. 모스 경도 7의 석영은 따로 요구하는 것이 없습니다.
