Riebeckite

Riebeckite is a silicate mineral recognized among collectors for its crystal form and distribution, with known Chinese sources.

About Riebeckite

Riebeckite is a silicate mineral in the amphibole group — sodic amphiboles and has the chemical formula Na2Fe2+3Fe3+2Si8O22(OH)2. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and holds a steady position among silicate species.

Identification & care

Riebeckite typically forms fibrous, asbestiform (crocidolite), acicular, massive. Its color is typically dark blue, bluish black and black. The luster is silky, vitreous, the streak is blue-gray, and specimens range from translucent to opaque. The cleavage is perfect {110}. The fracture is uneven, which aids identification.

Collector notes

For collectors, Riebeckite is a benchmark crystalline species. Riebeckite is widely represented across Chinese provinces, including Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia.
