About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica and feldspar at 7 cm and 115 g; a small cabinet plate. A plate of pale mica with aquamarine crystals grown on both faces as the supplier notes, and white feldspar at one end, the three minerals listed.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals. Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 3.8 × 7 × 4 cm (1.50 × 2.76 × 1.57 in) and 115 g (4.1 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
