About this specimen

Jinkouhe, Sichuan, citrine with calcite and quartz at 6.2 cm; a small cabinet piece. A domed crust of cream to honey-yellow crystals with rounded, waxy faces packed tightly across the whole upper surface, the colour deepening towards the centre.

Natural citrine of this kind is pale to honey yellow and keeps the glassy transparency of the parent quartz.

Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces. Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities.

Sichuan hosts Xuebaoding, Jinkouhe and Leshan, sources of aquamarine, scheelite, prehnite, gypsum and the epidote-quartz skarn specimens seen here.

The piece is small cabinet in size, 6.2 × 5.5 × 3.3 cm (2.44 × 2.17 × 1.30 in) and 74 g (2.6 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.

About Citrine

Citrine is the yellow to amber-brown variety of crystalline quartz, colored by trace iron. Natural specimens are uncommon in nature, and most material on the market is heat-treated amethyst.
