About this specimen
Handan, Hebei, epidote at 1.5 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Olive-green epidote blades open in a narrow fan from an orange-brown base, the blades striated along their length and standing well clear of the rock.
Epidote forms pistachio-green prismatic crystals, often striated, and is a classic companion of quartz and feldspar in Chinese skarn deposits.
The skarn iron deposits around Handan in southern Hebei produce sharp andradite garnet dodecahedra, magnetite and calcite.
The piece is thumbnail in size, 1.5 × 0.8 × 0.6 cm (0.59 × 0.31 × 0.24 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
