About this specimen

Yaogangxian purple-heart fluorite with pyrite at 32 g; a miniature with colour inside and sparkle outside.

Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and is prized for its saturated colour, glassy lustre and the way zoned phantoms appear when the crystals are back-lit.

Pyrite is the most collected metallic mineral, and the best pieces combine sharp form with a lustre that has not dulled; store it dry to keep it that way.

Yaogangxian Mine in Yizhang County is China's most famous mineral locality, a tungsten mine that has produced fine fluorite, arsenopyrite, quartz and cassiterite for three decades.

By size it is miniature, 3.8 × 3.6 × 2.2 cm (1.50 × 1.42 × 0.87 in) and 32 g (1.1 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
