About this specimen

Rhombohedra stacked like roof tiles: this Chenzhou thumbnail builds upward in overlapping plates, each offset from the last until the group steps out into a small tiered turret. The uppermost tiers carry a copper-red skin with a faint satin sheen; below them the same habit continues in cream and pale rose, glassy wherever the light strikes a face the weather never reached.

Stepped growth like this records interruption. Each pause in supply leaves a ledge, and the ledges stack into terraces — nothing was cut or shaped here, the form is entirely as it grew. Calcite is CaCO3, only 3 on the Mohs scale, cleaving cleanly in three directions: a fingernail will score it and a drop of vinegar will etch it, so dust it with a soft brush and keep anything acidic well clear.

A true thumbnail at 2.8 × 2.0 × 2.5 cm and 15 g, fixed with putty to the clear acrylic block it is photographed on, which travels with it. Every image here is of this one crystal group.
