About this specimen

Peru, rhodochrosite with galena and chalcopyrite at 2.9 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. A bright metallic galena crystal caps a dark sulphide matrix, with brassy chalcopyrite flecks scattered across it and a small cluster of pale pink rhodochrosite tucked in at the top.

The pink in rhodochrosite comes from manganese; crystals like these are far rarer than the banded stalactitic material used in jewellery.

Galena's silver-grey metallic lustre and cubic cleavage make the species instantly recognisable; wash hands after handling. Chalcopyrite has a deeper gold colour and softer lustre than pyrite and often tarnishes to peacock hues.

Peru's Huancavelica and Pasco mines are famous for pyrite, quartz, fluorite and sulfide specimens.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 2.9 × 2.2 × 1.8 cm (1.14 × 0.87 × 0.71 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Contains lead-bearing minerals: wash hands after handling and keep away from children and pets. Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
