About this specimen

Inner Mongolia large-crystal Morandi fluorite with quartz at 19.5 cm; a display piece with a soft, velvety colour.

Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and is prized for its saturated colour, glassy lustre and the way zoned phantoms appear when the crystals are back-lit.

Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.

Inner Mongolia's Huanggang and Chifeng districts produce fluorite, calcite, garnet and rhodochrosite in a lustre and clarity that set the modern standard for Chinese carbonates.

By size it is large cabinet, 19.5 × 16.2 × 6 cm (7.68 × 6.38 × 2.36 in) and 1590 g (56.1 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
