About this specimen

Congolese malachite with cobaltoan calcite at 35 g; a miniature with the Katanga Copperbelt's colours.

Cobaltoan calcite carries cobalt in the lattice, which turns ordinary calcite a hot pink to magenta; the Congo material is the world standard.

Collectors chase calcite for form rather than colour: crisp crystal edges and a habit you can identify from across the room. Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.

DR Congo's copper and cobalt districts produce the deepest green malachite and the most vivid cobaltoan calcite on the market.

By size it is miniature, 3.8 × 3.6 × 3.2 cm (1.50 × 1.42 × 1.26 in) and 35 g (1.2 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling. Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
