About this specimen
Blades of calcite no thicker than a fingernail overlap in rosettes across this entire face, white with the faintest warm blush where they crowd together. Each flower is built from flat platy crystals fanning out from a common point, and the fans stack in turn into low ridges, so the surface is all edges and small shadows. At the top, where the calcite thins, a grey glassy core shows through.
The platy, flower-like habit comes from calcite growing fast and flat instead of slowly into rhombs — the same species that yields Iceland spar, wearing a completely different coat. CaCO3, Mohs 3, perfect cleavage in three directions: the blade edges are the vulnerable part here, and a soft dry brush is the only cleaning tool this piece should ever meet.
