About this specimen
Dozens of small lavender spheres crowd the top of this Sulawesi chalcedony, packed tight in the centre and loosening into isolated domes toward the edges, all of them sitting on a darker violet-grey base. Along the lower right a cluster shifts to sea-green, and pale cream matrix crusts cling at both ends where the piece came away from its host rock. The surface has the soft waxy sheen typical of the material rather than a glassy shine.
Chalcedony is silica, SiO2, built from fibres too fine to see; the botryoidal habit forms when silica-rich fluid coats a cavity in volcanic rock and grows outward from countless seed points, each rounding into its own hemisphere. The trade name follows the look, not the chemistry. It also means a forgiving specimen: at Mohs 6.5 to 7 it handles far better than the soft carbonates sharing its shelf.
It measures 7.4 × 3.3 × 5.3 cm and weighs 120 g, sized to sit in the palm as photographed. No stand is included; the piece balances on its matrix edge. These images were taken of this exact cluster.
