About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, scheelite with mica at 4 cm and 59 g; a miniature. A honey-orange scheelite crystal with glassy faces sitting beside a fan of white mica books, the scheelite bright.
Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.
Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
The piece is miniature in size, 3.3 × 2.6 × 4 cm (1.30 × 1.02 × 1.57 in) and 59 g (2.1 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
