Bou Azzer is mined for cobalt, nickel and arsenic, and its oxidised zones produce some of the finest cobalt-arsenate minerals known. It is one of very few places mined primarily for cobalt rather than as a by-product.

The signature species are crimson erythrite (cobalt bloom) and rose-to-magenta roselite, alongside skutterudite, and occasional native silver and gold. Saturated pink and red cobalt minerals on matrix are the prize.
