About this specimen

A white dome, a crown of amber calcite — that is the piece in one line. The calcite crystals are tabular with lens-shaped edges, the colour of weak tea, several of them clear enough to show the ghost of a growth stripe inside; between them the matrix runs dark brown and earthy. The entire lower half is a tight druse of sugar-fine quartz, and only along the very base does a thin green rim of the fluorite show through at all.

That stacking is the specimen’s real interest. Green fluorite came first and is now almost entirely buried; a silica pulse then wrapped it in microcrystalline quartz; calcite grew last, on top of everything. Reading a three-stage sequence straight off a 3.6 cm thumbnail is the sort of thing a hand lens is made for. Handle it as the softest component demands — calcite is Mohs 3 and will etch on contact with anything acidic, vinegar and household cleaners included.

3.6 × 2.3 × 2.8 cm, 20 g, shown on putty on a clear acrylic block. Each photograph on this listing was taken of this one thumbnail.
