About this specimen
Terraced squares climb the face of this single fluorite crystal like cells in a printed code — the growth quirk behind the nickname. The body is a soft lavender, clouded rather than glassy, with one pocket of deep violet burning through near the lower edge and a thin bloom of tan iron stain along the right flank. Underneath, a crust of sugar-fine white druse forms the footing it grew on.
Those steps are a record of how the crystal built itself: fluorite (CaF2) stacks layer on layer, and when the supply of solution stutters, each new layer stops short of the last and leaves a ledge. Guizhou turns out fluorite in exactly this milky, softly saturated purple, a different animal from the glass-clear cubes of the Hunan mines. At Mohs 4 it scratches easily and parts on four octahedral planes: keep it clear of harder minerals and away from ultrasonic cleaners.
The crystal measures 4.6 × 2.3 × 3.6 cm and weighs 35 g, an easy one-hand size that stands upright on its druse base. The photographs are of this crystal and no other.
