About this specimen
Olive-green epidote sits in this quartz spray like moss caught under ice: small prismatic crystals wedged between the points along the left flank, while warm ochre iron staining pools deeper in, clouding some terminations and leaving others water-clear.
Garden quartz — lodolite, to use the trade name — is ordinary quartz that grew alongside whatever else the pocket offered: chlorite, clay, iron oxides, and here epidote, a calcium-aluminium-iron silicate whose pistachio green is hard to mistake for anything else. The iron is the part sealed in, pooling at fixed depths and drifting in and out of focus as the piece is turned, while the epidote sits wedged between the prisms rather than buried inside them. Quartz at Mohs 7 handles well; the only real fragility is at the needle tips.
5.6 × 3.6 × 1.8 cm and 40 g, putty-mounted on a clear acrylic cube. Nothing here is a stand-in — the photographs are of this cluster on that cube.
