About Skardu / Shigar Valley

Skardu and the surrounding Shigar/Braldu Valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan form one of the world’s most prolific gem pegmatite and alpine-cleft localities. The region produces world-class aquamarine, topaz, and rare-element pegmatite minerals from elevation 3,000-4,500 m miarolitic cavities.

Geology

Late Cretaceous-Tertiary granitic intrusions of the Karakoram batholith cut Precambrian metamorphic basement. Miarolitic cavity-bearing pegmatites and alpine-style cleft veins produce exceptional gem-pocket mineralization.

Notable Minerals

Aquamarine (sky-blue prismatic crystals to 30+ cm — among the world’s best), topaz (champagne to imperial), beryl (heliodor, morganite), fluorite (octahedral pink), muscovite (large books), tourmaline (multicolor), feldspar (smoky-purple Pakistani amazonite-like), quartz, epidote.

Collector Notes

Pakistani aquamarine matrix specimens compete with Erongo (Namibia) and Xuebaoding (Sichuan) for the world’s premier gem pegmatite display. Mining is small-scale and risky in remote terrain; supply is constrained.
