India is the global zeolite specimen capital. The Maharashtra Deccan flood basalts — particularly quarries near Pune (Poona), Nashik, Aurangabad, Jalgaon, and Mumbai — have supplied the world's zeolite collector market since active basalt quarrying intensified in the 1980s. The deposits combine geological scale, accessibility, and remarkable specimen diversity.
Maharashtra produces gem-grade mesolite, scolecite, chabazite, stilbite, heulandite, apophyllite, prehnite, natrolite, and many other zeolite-group species. Apophyllite is particularly notable: gem-clear cubic green and colorless crystals from Pune are the species' modern reference. Other Indian sources include Andhra Pradesh diamonds (the historic Golconda), Rajasthan emerald (Tikam Nagar), and ancient gem heritage from Sri Lanka-trade routes.
Indian dealer networks dominate global zeolite distribution. The Munich and Tucson gem shows feature extensive Indian zeolite sections every year. Quality grades range from accessible cabinet specimens to gem-clear apophyllite displayed in major institutions.
Maharashtra Deccan zeolites set the global zeolite collecting standard. Apophyllite + stilbite + chalcedony combinations from Pune are signature Indian specimens.
