About Příbram
Příbram in central Czech Republic is one of Europe’s greatest historic Pb-Ag mining districts — active continuously from the 13th century to 1991, producing over 4,200 metric tons of silver. The district is celebrated for spectacular pyrargyrite, native silver, and the world’s deepest historic mine workings (1,838 m).
Geology
The deposits are Variscan epithermal Pb-Ag-Sb veins cutting Late Proterozoic shales and metamorphic basement. Multi-stage hydrothermal pulses produced the characteristic Pb-Ag sulfosalt + native silver paragenesis.
Notable Minerals
Pyrargyrite (sharp scalenohedral dark-ruby-red crystals — among Europe’s finest), native silver (wires and dendritic forms), galena, sphalerite (often gem-clear), tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, calcite (large rhombs), quartz, siderite. Old “Pribram” specimens from the imperial Austrian-Hungarian period are 19th-century mineralogical heirlooms.
Collector Notes
Příbram pyrargyrite and silver-on-calcite specimens command premium provenance value in European silver collecting. Pair with Chañarcillo (Chile) and Cobalt (Ontario) for the world’s native silver trio.
